MEHMET POLAT QUARTET

Virtuoso oud player and composer Mehmet Polat returns with his quartet to present music from his latest albums. Bringing together outstanding jazz musicians, Polat creates an innovative musical language that bridges traditions from East and West. His original compositions combine lyrical melodies, adventurous improvisations, and infectious grooves, moving effortlessly between familiar rhythms and intricate odd time signatures.

The result is a distinctive sound rooted in musical traditions from around the world, yet infused with the freedom and spontaneity of contemporary jazz.

Recently acclaimed performances at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam and LantarenVenster in Rotterdam have further established the quartet as one of the most exciting ensembles on the European jazz scene. We are delighted to welcome them to the Greene Room.

The quartet features:

Together, the quartet explores a unique fusion of jazz and global musical traditions, continuing Polat's musical journey through rich cross-cultural landscapes that are contemplative, emotionally expressive, and rhythmically compelling.

CONTINUITY QUARTET

Their music is a captivating blend of original compositions and works by jazz greats such as Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, and McCoy Tyner. The quartet features Mischa van der Wekken (tenor saxophone), Jens Larsen (guitar), Noah Nicoll(bass), and the talented young drummer Dylan Vos.

Mischa has released two acclaimed albums: Momentum, featuring trumpeter Eric Vloeimans, and Make It Happen. Following these releases, he performed at numerous jazz venues and festivals throughout the Netherlands.

Born in Denmark and now based in the Netherlands, Jens Larsen has earned international recognition as a jazz guitarist and educator through his popular YouTube channel and Patreon community. Mischa and Jens both studied jazz at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and have been making music together for more than 25 years.

DUKE ELLINGTON PROJECT: SEVEN FOR DUKE

Music by the legendary jazz composer Duke Ellington, performed by a seven-piece ensemble led by Ruud Bergamin(saxophone, arrangements), featuring Marie van der Burg (vocals), Koos van der Hout (trumpet), Daniel Follmann(trombone), Nick van den Bos (piano), Vincent Kuiper (bass), and Victor de Boo (drums).

The 'Club' program explores music from his Cotton Club era (circa 1930), featuring some of the best-known pieces from his repertoire. The 'Church' program focuses on the sacred music from his Sacred Concerts (early 1960s), revealing another side of his extraordinary musical vision.

The composed, symphonic jazz of Duke Ellington (1899–1975) is regarded as a milestone in jazz history. His long-standing residency at New York's Cotton Club in the 1930s played a defining role in shaping his unmistakable musical style. Three decades later, Ellington presented a series of Sacred Concerts in churches across the United States, bringing that same distinctive voice to music inspired by spirituality and faith.

Bandleader Ruud Bergamin is a renowned and award-winning saxophonist based in Rotterdam. In addition to performing, he regularly gives lectures on a wide range of jazz musicians and styles. During the concert, he will share insights into jazz music in general and the life and work of Duke Ellington in particular.

QUARTET JOY SHECHTER

Joy Shechter is an Amsterdam-based pianist, blending elements of Jewish folk music, jazz and cinematic story-telling in his music. alongside his band, second naivety, he presents his debut record 'First Fruits' in Dec 2024 and is now bringing on stage material from his up and coming record. With Micheal Murray (alto saxophone), River Adomeit (bass) and Aviv Maya(drums).

EHBO

EHBO is a Dutch jazz quartet that brings together four generations of leading improvisers from the Netherlands. The group was formed during the Han Bennink Vierdaagse at the Roode Bioscoop and unites drummer Han Bennink, bassist Ernst Glerum, saxophonist Benjamin Herman, and pianist Oscar Jan Hoogland.

Each member is a prominent figure in the Dutch and international jazz scene: Bennink and Glerum form the core with deep roots in the Instant Composers Pool, Herman is widely known as the driving force behind New Cool Collective, and Hoogland represents a younger generation of experimental improvisers from Amsterdam.

EHBO’s music is driven by free improvisation, interaction, and playful virtuosity, resulting in performances that are spontaneous, energetic, and full of character. The quartet’s cross-generational chemistry creates a unique sound that bridges tradition and innovation in contemporary jazz.

LOET VAN DER LEE QUINTET + TANGERINE

The quintet led by Loet van der Lee on trumpet and flugelhorn, featuring Sebastiaan van Bavel (piano), Daan Kluwer (tenor saxophone), Johan Plomp (double bass), and David Puime (drums).

Led by trumpeter and composer Loet van der Lee, the ensemble presents modern jazz deeply rooted in tradition, bringing together original compositions and classic repertoire in a compelling program.

Founded in 1992, the quintet has performed extensively in clubs and at festivals both in the Netherlands and internationally. The band is known for its direct, energetic playing style and its strong connection with audiences, with improvisation, swing, and musical interplay at its core.

We open with the duo Tangerine: Aviv Noam (saxophone) and Daniëlle Friedman (piano). Aviv is familiar to us from his work with our Klezmokum band and his own concert in the Greene Room in October ’25. Daniëlle Friedman is an exceptional Israeli pianist who, after several years in New York, is now based in Berlin.

Tangerine’s genre-fluid music creates a distinctive sonic universe, shaped by the musicians’ shared sensibilities as well as their individual artistic voices. Blending jazz, avant-garde and free improvisation with Middle Eastern influences and Western classical colors, they craft a cohesive and truly unique sound.

MICHEAL MOORE & ACHIM KAUFMAN

The duo Michael Moore (clarinet/saxophone) and Achim Kaufmann (piano). Michael is a well-known clarinet and saxophone player, original from the USA but long time living in Amsterdam. Achim is from Germany and also a well-know piano player.

Pianist Achim Kaufmann and saxophonist/clarinetist Michael Moore have been collaborating since the late 1990s, when Kaufmann was living in Amsterdam. Their music blends free improvisation with original compositions and works by distinctive jazz composers such as Herbie Nichols and Andrew Hill.

Over more than 25 years of working together, their interplay has reached an almost telepathic level. On their recent double album ’22’, Hill’s music forms a central thread, alongside new compositions by both musicians. With warm clarinet tones and subtle, often percussive piano textures, they move effortlessly between delicate intimacy and raw, expressive intensity. After nearly two years apart, this renewed collaboration promises another unpredictable and adventurous musical journey.

SERENADE TO SILVER

+ SCOTCH & WATER JAZZ BAND

On Sunday, 22 February at 14:30, the afternoon will open with the Scotch & Water Jazz Band. This nine-piece amateur jazz band, founded 15 years ago with band coach Ruud Bergamin, is based in Utrecht.

Their repertoire spans a wide range of jazzy and bluesy tunes, from swing to funk, and it’s always groovy.

At 15:30, Serenade to Silver, a quintet led by saxophonist Ruud Bergamin, will perform. This Rotterdam-based jazz group pays tribute to the music of legendary American pianist and composer Horace Silver.

The band consists of Arjan Stam on trumpet, Ruud Bergamin tenor saxophone, Pieter van Santen on piano, Frans Bouwmeester on bass, and René Winter on drums.

LINDE TILLMANNS TRIO

Sunday 25 January: another double concert, starting with Trio van Linde Tillmanns.
This formation is the musical child of pianist and composer Linde Tillmanns, who chose drums and trumpet for their strong melodic and rhythmic presence in her music. The trio alternates between telling stories and painting with sound.

Singer Rolinha Kross is unfortunately not ably to come to the Greene Room due to the death of her mother. Linde Thillmanns trio will extend their performance after the break.

KLEZMOKUM - Burton Greene Revival Band

The ensemble, formed in honor of the late Burton Greene, paid tribute to his pioneering fusion of klezmer and jazz with a program of original compositions and inventive arrangements. The band's lineup featured Yehorii Uzhva on tenor saxophone, Uriah Gunter on clarinet, Joy Shechter on piano, Harold Berghuis handling both bass and guitar and Roberto Haliffi on drums and percussion.

Each musician showcased exceptional talent, contributing to the group's dynamic and cohesive performance. Throughout the concert, the Klezmokum Revival band demonstrated their unique ability to intertwine klezmer traditions with modern jazz improvisations. This fusion created a rich tapestry of sound that honored the past while embracing contemporary influences, offering the audience a fresh perspective on Jewish musical heritage.

BAZTIDOS + MARTIN WIRÉN

The Swedish saxophonist Martin Wirén gave a solo performance. His new recordings have a fluent feeling and expressive harmonic structure, creating a wave of colorful sounds that takes the listener on an emotional journey. Ranging the saxophone from a low register to a high whistling sound in the upper register creates a combination and feeling of mountains swell as the deep sea. He was accompanied in some pieces by Linde Tillmanns on the grand piano.

Baztidos, a jazz ensemble of five musicians who create their own interpretation of world music by combining styles from the Balkans, Jamaica, Africa, and South America. They are known for their adventurous and culturally diverse sounds, emphasizing a surprising musical landscape in which different cultures come together. With Sam Ritchie on trumpet, Tim Kerssies on accordion, Harold Berghuis on guitar, Jasper de Beer on bass, and Roberto Haliffi on drums and percussion; they perform regularly at jazz café Alto.

Aviv Noam & Oscar Ployart Quintet

Is a five piece international band based in Amsterdam. Inspired by Charles Mingus, they play bluesy, avant-garde and swinging music. With twists and turns they bounce between extremes - from lyrical ballads to tumultuous ‘burners’ - using eccentric tempo changes and dynamic contrasts to playfully navigate a capricious musical landscape. Their original compositions are rooted in the traditional idioms and colours of jazz music from the 50s and 60s but also flirt with the timbres of modern life’s absurdity in 2025.

ATZKO KOHASHI & TONY OVERWATER + MICHAEL MOORE

The duo of Atzko Kohashi (piano) and Tony Overwater (double bass) masterfully creates a unique sonic world with subtle intensity and musicality, where space, silence, and interplay take center stage. For this special concert, they are joined by clarinetist Michael Moore, whose lyrical playing adds an extra dimension to the repertoire.

Together, they perform music from their recently released album Porgy, inspired by I Loves You, Porgy from Porgy and Bess. In response to this remarkable composition, they wrote original pieces that together form an homage to Gershwin’s original work.

WORKSHOP & JAMSESSION

On Sunday afternoon, June 22, there will be a performance by the jazz workshop led by saxophonist Ruud Bergamin. The workshop will take place during the Pentecost weekend (June 6–9) in Sint Geertruid, Limburg, with 12 amateur jazz musicians. They will rehearse various jazz pieces, which will be performed on the 22nd in the Greene Room. Ruud Bergamin is a highly experienced workshop leader, as well as a bandleader, composer, and arranger. Together with organizer Ben van Veen, who also participates as a musician, they have been running numerous workshops since 2006, see www.veenjazzexpressions.nl

After the performance, there will be a jam session led by Ruud, where attending musicians can join in on selected pieces.
Admission is free for both the concert and the jam session; a suitable donation for your bowl of soup and drink is appreciated.

KLEZMOKUM - Burton Greene Revival Band

On March 23, 2025, the Greene Room resonated with the vibrant sounds of the Burton Greene Revival band, delivering a memorable evening of jazz-infused klezmer music. The ensemble, formed in honor of the late Burton Greene, paid tribute to his pioneering fusion of klezmer and jazz with a program of original compositions and inventive arrangements. The band's lineup featured Itai Weissman on tenor saxophone and EWI, Uriah Gunter on clarinet, Joy Shechter on piano, Harold Berghuis handling both bass and Roberto Haliffi on drums and percussion.

Each musician showcased exceptional talent, contributing to the group's dynamic and cohesive performance. Throughout the concert, the Klezmokum Revival band demonstrated their unique ability to intertwine klezmer traditions with modern jazz improvisations. This fusion created a rich tapestry of sound that honored the past while embracing contemporary influences, offering the audience a fresh perspective on Jewish musical heritage.

Linus Eppinger Quartet

Linus Eppinger is a soulful jazz guitarist in the tradition of Wes Montgomery and George Benson. He lives in Amsterdam and leads his own quartet, which has released two albums so far. With his rhythm section he has found the perfect way to amplify, support and inspire his musical voice. They released their debut "Leaning In" in 2022 (“Relaxed and confident enough never to play an unwanted note, he sails through each song with effortless superiority” - Simon Adams, Jazz Journal UK).

As an educator, Linus teaches in the young talent program of the  Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

The band TangoZZs&World illustrates the "boundary-crossing" nature of music in the positive sense of the word. Using a jazz-inspired approach, various musical styles are seamlessly merged into a cohesive whole. It is inclusive music, sometimes with a playful touch.

Sunday, October 20, featured a performance with singer Rolinha Kross.
This is what René van Schaik said about the performance: "Hi Ben, I really enjoyed the performance last Sunday. Fantastic singer and guitarist, as well as the saxophonist. You've found a great venue; it deserves a bigger audience."

Klezmokum concert

Sunday, June 23rd, the festive opening of the insulated music studio and museum space for Burton Greene took place. His old group, Klezmokum, was "revived" that day with a debut concert and a selection of their classic songs. Of the original group, only drummer/percussionist Roberto Haliffi is still part of the lineup. For the concert, we made use of the front area of the industrial warehouse belonging to the landlord, Renato's Pizzarias, located at Elementenstraat 16 in Amsterdam-West.
